Students across the UK are required to carry their heavy books and laptops, handouts, and other school-related possessions to school every day. It is no rocket science to understand that this may lead to serious neck pain and issues with their spinal cord.
This is one of the many reasons school lockers are an integral part of every educational establishment. They offer a safe space for students to keep their belongings, while also taking the burden off their backs and promoting better health.
However, choosing the perfect locker for your students can be difficult, especially with the amount of choice there is out there in terms of size, colour, material and height.
That is why we here at Strip Curtains Direct have created an easy guide to help you choose the right lockers for your school.
MATERIAL
Different types of materials are used in locker manufacturing, but the three main ones are plastic, laminate, and metal.
The material you choose depends on where your lockers will be living. For example, if you require water-resistant lockers for changing rooms or outdoor use, we recommend plastic lockers.
Metal lockers on the other hand are the traditional choice for a school locker room. They are cost-effective and allow a lot of flexibility when it comes to size, shape, colour and configuration. An extra advantage of metal lockers is that they are coated with antibacterial paint which protects against harmful bacteria and reduces the risk of spreading diseases such as MRSA and E-Coli – ideal for reducing the spread of illnesses around the school.
Laminate lockers tend to be a little more expensive; however, they offer resistance towards scratches, unwanted graffiti and impact. They are designed to withstand the general wear and tear of day-to-day use within a school environment.
COMPARTMENTS
When choosing the ideal locker for your school, you must take into consideration the amount of stuff each student will need to store.
Cubed lockers are extremely economical, space efficient and perfect for storing a school bag, a few books or small valuables. The only downside is that that there will be no space for students to hang their coat or store larger items.
High lockers, on the contrary, offer lots of vertical storage space without taking up too much of your floor space and are available with multiple compartments.
COLOUR
For the body of your lockers, we offer two neutral shades, white and silver-grey which give a sophisticated look. For the doors, we offer a wide range of colours to suit your school’s colour scheme. We find, however, that primary colours work best for primary schools and provide the perfect contrast to the furniture.
ADDITIONAL SCHOOL STORAGE
As well as lockers for personal belongings, you may also require charging lockers for electric devices such as laptops, PPE lockers for your science lab to store personal protection items, or even a mesh locker for the janitor to store their tools and personal belongings.
Lockers are one of the best facilities any school could invest in for their students. A school locker proves to be a productive investment, from providing a safe space to store personal belongings to creating clutter-free surroundings.
